Central African Republic Bans Text Messages

Central African Republic Bans Text Messages
The Central African Republic’s government has banned the use of mobile phone messages.
The ban comes after days of violent protests in the capital, Bangui, and a mass text message campaign calling for a general strike, BBC reports.
Authorities reportedly made this decision in order to help restore security after over a year of deadly ethnic and religious violence.
Protesters reportedly want the transitional government that assumed power in January to resign.
Conflict in the country began last year as mainly Muslim Seleka rebels, led by Michel Djotodia, seized power in the majority Christian country.
Although Djotodia resigned as president in January, the interim government has been unable to curb the violence between Christian and Muslim militia groups.

EXCLUSIVE: Jonathan’s axe dangles over Diezani

President Goodluck Jonathan is “seriously” considering dropping Mrs Diezani Alison-Madueke as minister of petroleum resources, several sources have told OTOHMILLAR. But one of the sources said “don’t bet on it yet because the matter has been on the president’s table for a while without him taking any action”. In the expected shock shake-up, Jonathan will not name a substantive petroleum minister but appoint a special adviser instead.

A mining engineer, who was once managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, is heavily favoured for the new position. If Jonathan goes ahead with the plan, the arrangement will be similar to what obtained under former President Olusegun Obasanjo who operated with a special adviser for six out of his eight years in office. An associate of the president told OTOHMILLAR: “Yes, Diezani’s removal has been on the cards.

She was actually supposed to have been removed when Stella Oduah was dropped from the cabinet in February but the president decided to delay it.” Alison-Madueke, now the longest serving minister in the cabinet, is easily the most controversial figure in Jonathan’s government. Jonathan nominated her into former President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua’s cabinet in 2007. She was first made minister of transportation, then moved to mines and steel development in 2008 and appointed minister of petroleum resources in April 2010 when Jonathan was acting president.

The controversies under her watch include the Malabu oil deal; the transfer of operatorship of NNPC’s oil wells to Atlantic Energy Drilling Concept Ltd, Septa Energy and Taleveras; allegation of not doing national youth service; the kerosene subsidy case and the N10 billion jet charter affair. “All along, the president believed that all the allegations against her were targeted at him. He believed it was proxy war, that Diezani did nothing wrong,” the source said.

The source further told OTOHMILLAR that it has become clear to the president that his second term bid will be affected by the Alison-Madueke baggage. Last month, there was a litany of negative editorials against Jonathan in the international media in which his government was labelled as corrupt based mainly on the allegations against the petroleum minister. An Aso Rock insider said: “If it is true that the president has finally decided to fire Diezani, then the spell has been broken.” A minister told OTOHMILLAR that the conduct of Alison-Madueke at cabinet meetings had been “very embarrassing” at times. “There was a day she engaged the president in a hot argument over a memo. Everybody went quiet, totally embarrassed. The president had to stamp his feet before she backed out,” he said. She is also said to be in the habit of leaving federal executive council meetings midway.

“She developed a style in which she would leave her bag on her seat, go to a corner, bow to the president to take an excuse as if she was going to use the loo and that would be it for the day. Her aides will come for her bag later. Most times, she is at the presidential villa while bundles of files are lying untreated on her desk,” the minister said. It is yet unclear if Jonathan will see through his latest move to drop her from the cabinet, but a source told OTOHMILLAR “the likelihood is higher than ever before”.

Obasanjo and I have reconciled, says Atiku

The rift between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and  his deputy, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has been settled, the former vice-president has said. Abubakar told a youth group in Abuja on Tuesday that he harbours no hatred or enmity with the former president.
Both of them had a very public falling-out their second term in office between 2003 and 2007, leading to a series of litigation as Obasanjo tried to stop Abubakar from succeeding him. The former VP eventually defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in order to pursue his presidential bid in 2007, but it was not successful.

Abubakar is now a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and is believed to be aiming another shot at the presidency in 2015. “I don’t harbour any grudge against my former boss. Yes, we had disagreements in office. These were mere disagreements. I harbour no hatred or enmity against him or anybody. I never had anything against him and I will never have,” Atiku told the Northern Youth Leaders Forum, led by Eliot Afiyo.

The group, which said it was trying to resolve the rift between the two men, first met with Obasanjo weeks ago and the former president said he had forgiven his former vice-president. Abubakar told the group “politics is not war” and you can only talk about “opponents, not enemies”.

The former VP then appealed to the federal government to take the current security challenges more seriously. “If we can go to other countries to rid them of these kinds of problems, it shows that we have the capacity to put this one down immediately so that the suffering of the people can be reduced,” he said.

Nigerian international Onazi Ogenyi hits back at match fixing claims in Twitter backlash

Nigerian international Onazi Ogenyi has taken to Twitter following match-fixing claims.
Agent Henry Chukwuma Okoroji was caught on camera telling an undercover reporter that he could fix the outcome of matches at this summer's World Cup.
Lazio midfielder Ogenyi was present at the meeting, as he reportedly offered to ensure a yellow card for over £40,000 and a penalty for more than £80,000.
But the 21-year-old has now taken to his social media account to clarify his position and reiterate his opposition to any such activity.
"My attention has been drawn to a publication relating to issues about match fixing," he tweeted.
"First, let me state unequivocally that I have no link whatsoever to any individual or group with ties to the corrupt issues of match fixing.
"A certain Mr Okoroji was mentioned in the publication. My previous contact with Mr Okoroji was based on the fact that we are both Nigerians.
"As a matter of fact, I am surprised to learn that Mr Okoroji is a FIFA licensed agent.
"On the day of this meeting, he had earlier told me that his associates had an endorsement proposition for my consideration.
"I duly informed my friend and who manages my affairs.
"When I got to the meeting, I found out it was all about fixing matches. I told them a resounding NO and left.
These allegations come fresh on the heels of the news that the Super Eagles' clash with Scotland last week was being investigated after allegedly being targeted by criminal syndicates.

When I got to the meeting, I found out it was all about fixing matches. I told them a resounding NO and left.

Borno State Governor Attends Emir’s Burial With 150 Soldiers

Borno State Governor, Kashim Shettima yesterday attended slain Emir of Gwoza’s burial, amidst tight security. It was reported that over 150soldiers and few police men escorted the Governor to attend the burial ceremony.
It will be recalled that the Emir of Gwoza, Alhaji Shehu Mustapha Idris Timta was killed on his way to the burial of the Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar, who died in a London hospital where he was undergoing cancer treatment.
The late Emir of Gwoza was murdered around 10am by Boko Haram men, and another Emir with him only managed to escape. Sadly, no Emir was able to attend his burial for the fear of being kidnapped or killed.
Governor Shettima, while addressing family and friends who attended the burial, battled to control his tears as he delivered his tribute and condolences. He described the late Shehu as “a man who spent better part of his reign preaching peace and tolerance.
“This is not a day for long speeches; it is a day of mourning of our late father and ruler. May Allah give us yet another monarch that will love his people in the manner the late Shehu Idrissa Timta did.
The late emir is survived by his centenarian mother, 28 children, 14 grandchildren and 14 siblings.

Like hail, curses have been raining on Samuel Uba, a 65-year-old man in Kalabari Beach, Oguta Local Government Area, Imo State, who is alleged to have committed an abominable act by repeatedly raping his 17-year-old daughter, Hannah Uba and impregnating her in the process. The poor teenager is now saddled with a five-month-old pregnancy. It was the timely intervention of the police that prevented irate youths in the community from lynching him when they got wind of the abominable act after the violated and traumatized teenager finally summoned the courage to report the matter to a neighbour, who in turn informed the leader of the youths.

I Wasn’t Made UNIZIK VC Because I Refused To Pay N60m Bribe – Prof Nwakoby

Prof. Greg Nwakoby of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (UNIZIK) has revealed how his refusal to bribe the screening panel N60 million cost him the chance to become the vice chancellor of the university despite emerging the best out of the nine professors screened for the position.

In a petition before the Senate, Nwakoby, a deputy vice chancellor in charge of administration of UNIZIK, said he came first with 89.65 percent out of other eight vice chancellorship candidates that sat before the Vice Chancellor Selection Exercise headed by Alhaji Buhari Bala and supported by the chairman of the University Council, Air Vice Marshall Larry Koinya.
Other professors that sat for the screening before the Vice Chancellor Selection Exercise with their scores during the interviews were Prof. Ben Osisioma (79.4 percent), Prof. Ifeoma Enweani (65.5 percent), Prof. Ikechukwu Oluka (66.15 percent), Prof. Azubuike Nwankwo (73.9 percent) Prof. Joseph Ahaneku (80.65 percent) Prof. Nwabueze (64.4 percent) and Prof. Okechukwu Ikpeze (76.3 percent).
Members of the Vice Chancellor Screening Panel include; Alhaji Buhari Bala, AVM Larry Koinya, Senator Fidelis Okoro, Prof. Amobi Illika, Prof. C.C. Egolum, Dr. Nte Mbam from the Federal Character Commission, Omotora E.B from the Federal Ministry of Education and Peter Egah also from the Federal Character Commission.
According to him, the university advertised the vacancy for the position of vice chancellor on December 24 2013 and 34 candidates were shortlisted. Nine of the nine candidates were invited for interview on May 22 and 23 2014, in which he came top with 89.65 percent.
“On May 24 2014, I was invited by Senator Fidelis Okoro and Alhaji Bala Buhari at Finotel Hotel, Awka, because I also lodged in the same hotel. On entering the hotel room of Senator Fidelis Okoro, they made a demand N30 million respectively (i.e. N30 million for each of them totaling N60 million) from me as a condition for returning me as the Vice Chancellor. Senator Fidelis Okoro claimed that he would use part of his own share to settle Barrister J.M. Aseh, whereas Alhaji Bala Buhari would settle the chairman of the Governing Council.”
“I refused their demand and insisted that as I came first in the interview and screening I could not do such a thing. They told me that Prof. Joseph Ahaneku had made the offer to them but that as I was the best that it was easier to support me. I still refused their offer,” he added.
“On May 26 2014, the council chairman reconvened the meeting of the Council which started by about 1 pm. Before the meeting, Senator Fidelis Okoro told me that Senator Pius Anyim, the Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF) had directed that Prof. Joseph Ahaneku should be appointed the Vice Chancellor and that Anyim had also appointed one Senator Ben Collin Ndu to replace Chief John Nwodo so as to ensure his bid succeed. Chief John Nwodo was appointed a member of the Governing Council sometime in April 2013 but did not come for the inauguration and had never attended the council meeting since then.”
The professor noted that after the Vice Chancellor Screening report, the announcement of the outcome of the screening was postponed.

Why I Sleep And Wake Up In Coffins- Lagos Preacher[Photo]

Prophet Pa Samuel Olawale ( a.k.a Kogberegbe) it has no meaning as he sleeps in the coffin and in the grave preaching the gospel.  The Nation reports.

Conspicuously displayed on this Mountain of Prayer is a big van with the inscription, ‘The Holy Michael Church of The Lord ( Aladura) Cherubim and Seraphim ,  Preacher  Prophet S.O Olawale  (a.ka.Kogberegbe).” In the  said vehicle is a  big white-creamy  painted coffin covered with a black cloth having the  following words ‘THIS IS THE END OF YOUR LIFE AND YOUR POST’  inscribed on it, all in capital letters!
Fear will normally envelope most people seeing for the first time a coffin draped with black cloth and a grave dug  by the altar . This is, however, a familiar sight to the congregation of this church. They have grown used to it.
