Patrick Sawyer, Suspected Liberia Ebola Case in Lagos, Is Dead

FrontPageAfrica has been informed that Mr. Patrick Sawyer, a WASH consultant at the Ministry of Finance, who had been quarantined since falling ill after arriving in the Nigerian state of Lagos for a conference last Sunday, has died.
A Liberian government official, speaking on condition of anonymity said the news of Sawyer's death was relayed to Liberia by the Nigerian embassy, early Friday morning.
Nigerian government health authorities announced Thursday that Sawyer, 40 was being tested for the deadly Ebola virus in Nigeria's commercial capital of Lagos, a megacity of 21 million people.
Sawyer's death is the first recorded case of one of the world's deadliest diseases in Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy and most populous nation, with 170 million people and some of Africa's least adequate health infrastructure.
Ebola has killed 632 people across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since an outbreak began in February, straining a string of weak health systems despite international help.

The virus -- which starts off with flu-like symptoms and often ends with horrific hemorrhaging -- has infected about 1,048 people and killed an estimated 632 since this winter, according to the numbers on July 17 from the World Health Organization.
Ebola is both rare and very deadly. Since the first outbreak in 1976, Ebola viruses have infected thousands of people and killed about one-third of them. Symptoms can come on very quickly and kill fast:
FrontPageAfrica reported Thursday that Sawyer may have contracted the virus from his sister, who died at the Catholic Hospital some three weeks ago. Sawyer had told friends that the sister husband had fled the home after the wife died and that he(Patrick) convinced him to report to health authorities to check for signs of Ebola.
Ebola has killed 660 people across Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone since an outbreak in February, straining their flimsy healthcare systems despite international help.
On Thursday, a spokesman for the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva confirmed Nigeria had "one suspect case" and said samples had been sent to a WHO lab for testing.

I Sell Human Parts To Politicians! Suspect Caught With Human Head, Leg & Hand

The Commissioner of Police, Kwara State, Mr Ambrose Aisabor, yesterday, paraded two suspects, among others, for dealing in human parts. The third person paraded was said to be an accomplice.
Speaking at the Police Headquarters along Ahmadu Bello Way, Ilorin, the commissioner told newsmen that the two suspects were arrested with human head, leg and hand in Tabira village, Okuta in Baruten Local Government Area of the state.
Aisabor said the suspects, Amos Kareem and Abubakar Ladan, were arrested following a tip-off, stressing that during investigation they confessed to the crime.
One of the suspects, Abubakar Ladan, told Vanguard that Amos Kareem promised to give him a motorcycle if he could find him human head, hand and leg.
He said his desire to own a motorcycle prompted him to go to a burial ground and cut off the human head, leg and hand that were displayed.
Amos Kareem, when asked what he was doing with human parts, said some politicians used to buy the parts from him.
The suspects, however, refused to disclose the identity of politicians who patronise them.
The police also paraded a man said to be an accomplice, having accommodated the suspects in Tabira village, claiming that he never knew that the suspects were involved in such atrocity.

9 Nigerian Students Kidnapped in Ukraine

Ukrainian news agencies say militants abducted the Nigerian students on Monday and have been holding them as prisoners at an occupied government security building. The city is deep inside rebel-held territory, close to the Russian border.
Colonel Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council, on Wednesday told a news conference that negotiations are underway to free the abducted Nigerian students. That people with experience conducting negotiations were now making contact with what he called "the terrorists."  Adding that Ukrainian officials hoped the talks would end "successfully in the near future."
Separatists seeking greater autonomy have been waging a bloody battle in eastern Ukraine against the
government.

Deadly Ebora Virus Confirmed In Lagos Hospital

The deadly Ebora virus has sadly been discovered in an hospital near Obalende, in Lagos State. A Liberian man in his 40s is being tested for Ebola virus in Lagos, according to Reuters.
The Lagos State Health Minisiry confirms the story today Thursday 24th July 2014.
Ebola has killed over 632 people in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone since the outbreak in February.
This is the first record of the deadly disease in Nigeria, Africa’s biggest economy, with over 170 million people.

A businesswoman, identified as Lizzy, has been found dead at her apartment on the Odusanya Oduguwa Crescent, Green Estate, Amuwo Odofin Area of Lagos State. The incident happened on Saturday morning.
PUNCHMetro reports that the 39-year-old indigene of Anambra State was murdered in cold blood by her boyfriend who also carted away her money, ATM cards, jewellery and a Range Rover Sport.
Their correspondent learnt from a police source that Lizzy, an executive in a networking firm, had four children from a previous marriage which had broken down and was planning to travel to the United States on Thursday (today) when she was strangled by the suspect.

A shocking new video has emerged of a couple having sex in broad daylight apparently filmed on a Magaluf street.
The couple’s romp between two parked cars was captured on film by someone recording them through a window.
The footage is too shocking to broadcast but during their two-minute encounter they are failed to be put off by passing cars.

Magaluf, a major holiday resort on Majorca, is still reeling from the bad publicity generated when a 21-year-old from County Armagh in Northern Ireland was filmed performing a sex act on 24 men during a pub crawl .
The mayor of Calvia, the region which includes Magaluf and five other resorts popular with Britons, said last month he had passed a law “giving us tighter control over the operation of pub crawl organisers”.
Manuel Onieva also said a police investigation had started into last month’s incident, adding that he wished to “express my total rejection and anger at the  activities which were carried out in a video  which is currently on the social media circuit”.

Nyanya bomb blast suspect, Aminu Sadiq Ogwuche who was recently extradited from Sudan, and currently answering questions from security operatives has said, he will never beg for forgiveness because he did the right thing by bombing Nyanya motor park which led to the death of over 70 people and left 120 injured.

“I don't deny that I am the executioner of the Nyanya bomb incident. I did it in order to draw government's attention to our demands. It's time for dialogue between government and Boko Haram leaders for the way out of the deadlock,” he was quoted as saying.

Ex-Lawmaker Marries Two Friends As 3rd & 4th Wives In Lagos

Hon. Abdullateef Abdulkareem, a former member of Lagos House of Assembly and a former Special Adviser to Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola on Political and Legislative Powers, must be a devout Muslim, who believes in fulfilling all the tenets of the religion to its letters.
Hon. Abdulkareem, who is a lawyer and the Chief Imam of the Lagos House of Assembly since 2003, married his third wife on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 and he is planning to marry the fourth on Tuesday, October 28, 2014.
Ironically, his third and fourth wives are friends. His third wife, Hadizat, is a 23 year-old corper doing her primary assignment with Lagos House of Assembly. She graduated from Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State.
Encomium Weekly gathered that it was Hadizat who pleaded with her husband, Hon. Abdulkareem to marry her and her friend, Rekihat together so that she will have a mate to play with.
She argued that the two senior wives are too old for her to play with and would be difficult for her to relate with and therefore, pleaded with him to marry her friend.
The man agreed with her and decided to marry the two friends.
Hadizat’s marriage came up on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, somewhere in Gbagada, Lagos. One of those in attendance during the Nikkai ceremony was Mr. Charles Oputa a.k.a Charly Boy.
She (Hadizat) had earlier fixed her marriage for November 2014 because that is when her parents who reside in Lokoja, Kogi State would have the opportunity and time to attend. But when she got the information that her friend, Rekihat has fixed hers for August, 2014, which will make her Rekihat her senior in their household, she decided to bring her parents quickly to do her own Nikkai in July.
Now that her own Nikkai has been performed, she is said to be happy that she is going to be her friend’s senior.
When we called Hon. Abdullateef Abdulkareem, he confirmed the marriage to us. He was the one who corrected us that the fourth marriage will be on October 28, 2014 and not August that we heard it will take place.

Beyoncé and Jay Z have been plagued with divorce rumors, with many onlookers speculating that the couple is staying together only until the end of their “On The Run” tour. The duo appear to be all smiles for their audiences while they are in concert, but they might just be keeping face until their final 10 shows when the tour ends in mid-September.
Jay Z, whose real name is Sean Carter, is rumored to be cheating on Beyoncé, widely regarded as the queen of R&B. Nigeria Air Force Jet Crashes In Borno

A Nigerian Air Force Mi-35 Helicopter on a training mission has crashed, the Defence Headquaters has said. The jet crashed this afternoon due to technical fault at a location South of Bama, Defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, said in a statement. The statement did not say whether anyone was killed or injured in the crash.
Mr. Olukolade, a Major General, said investigation has commenced to unravel the circumstances leading to the accident. He however said the accident was not a result “of any enemy action”. Further details on the crash, Mr. Olukolade said, would be made known as investigation progresses.

UNN Law Lecturer Commits Suicide

Tragedy struck at the Enugu Campus of the University of Nigeria, (UNEC) last weekend as a lecturer at the institution's Law Faculty, Dr Bede Opata committed suicide over yet-to-be ascertained reasons.
The lecturer who was until his death, the son of a former Commissioner in the old Anambra state, Chief Cletus Opata hailed from Nsukka area of Enugu state.
Informed sources at the university said the deceased had taken his life in his apartment within the town on Saturday night but his body was discovered on Sunday.
The 38-year old Opata who held a Doctorate Degree in Law was said to have been employed as a lecturer in the university in 2011.

Ebonyi Speaker Impeached

Members of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Monday, July 21, 2014 impeached the Speaker, Mr Chukwuma Nwazunku.
According to reports, 18 out of the 24 members of the House voted for his impeachment.
Before carrying out the impeachment, the members lifted the impeachment of three members of the house who were on suspension.
The three members are Frank Onwe, Eni Uduma Chime and deputy speaker, Blaise Orji.
Right after being re-instated, Frank Onwe moved the motion for the Speaker’s impeachment which was seconded by the minority leader, Enyi C. Enyi.
Thereafter, Eni Uduma Chima representing Afikpo South West moved the motion for election of Helen Nwaobasi representing Abakaliki South state constituency.
The motion was seconded by Jerry Obasi.

Rilwanu Lukman dies at 75

Rilwanu Lukman died this morning in Austria at the age of 76 years.
Rilwanu Lukman is a Nigerian engineer who held several ministerial positions in the Nigerian Federal government before becoming Secretary General of OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) from 1 January 1995 to 31 December 2000.
On 18 December 2008, Lukman was appointed Minister of Petroleum Resources by Nigerian president Umaru Yar’Adua, holding office until March 2010.
Lukman was born in Zaria, Kaduna State on 26 August 1938.
He trained as a mining engineer at the College of Arts, Science, and Technology, Zaria (now Ahmadu Bello University), and then at Imperial College, London.
He earned a higher degree in mining engineering from the University of Mining and Metallurgy in Leoben, Austria (1967–1968).
He obtained a degree in Mineral Economics from McGill University, Montreal in 1978, and an honorary doctorate degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bologna in Italy.
His first job in the mining industry was as an Assistant Mining Engineer with A B Statsgruvor of Sweden (1962–1964).
