House Committee members walk out on IGP after he refers to the Speaker as 'one Alhaji Tambuwal"

The Inspector general of police, Sulaiman Abba, appeared before the House of Representatives Police Committee today after several days of ignoring their invitation. The meeting chaired by Usman Bello Kumo quickly denigrated into bad blood between committee members and the IGP.
The IG had opened his statement explaining why the police incaded the house last week by rehashing the initial police statement that they had credible intelligence that some thugs had planned on causing mayhem at the resumed sitting of the house.
He said this intelligence led them to send policemen to the house to confront that thugs.
He proceeded to say that one Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal led a group of thugs to overpower the security at the first gate. A move he claimed led the police to lock down the second gate and fire a canister of teargas.
However, his reference to the “Speaker of the House as “one Alhaji Tambuwal” drew the ire of committee members who asked the IGP to properly address the speaker of the house according to protocol.
The house committee members asked the IGP to revisit the way he addressed the speaker, the IG then said the case of the speaker was in court and as such he wouldn’t like to comment further on it.
The committee member refused to proceed with the hearing until the IGP properly addressed the speaker. They said as long as he refuses to do so,  they too would no longer recognize him as IG.

Buhari’s Aircraft Barred From Landing At Makurdi Airport

A chartered aircraft conveying former Head of State and All Progressive Congress, APC, presidential aspirant, Gen. Mohammadu Buhari (rtd) and his entourage, was Wednesday allegedly denied landing rights by the authorities of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, in Makurdi,  Benue State.
Vanguard gathered from a reliable source that Gen. Buhari, alongside his entourage, was travelling from Bayelsa State to Makurdi to woo delegates of his party ahead of the APC delegates congress scheduled for December but had their flight denied permission to touch down in Makurdi.
According to him, “the flight was earlier granted landing permission but we were all surprised when half an hour to his arrival a counter directive was issued mid-flight thereby forcing the aircraft to head to Abuja.
“What they did was evil and dangerous, what if the plane was low on fuel, what do you think would have happened? Desperation has set into our politics, and it is posing grave danger to our democracy.”
When contacted on phone, the Benue State Chairman of the APC, Comrade Abba Yaro confirmed the development describing it as unfortunate.
He explained that loyalists of the party who had laid siege at the airport Wednesday morning were disappointed and had to disperse when they learnt of the unfortunate development.
“We will certainly react to this ugly incident because what they have done was not only callous and wicked but also unacceptable in modern day Nigeria.”
All attempts to speak with officials of FAAN in Makurdi on the matter failed as they all declined to comment on the issue.

Lagos Lawyer Finds Out Two of His Children Aren’t His After 10 Years

The police have arraigned one Edith Bidokwu for allegedly defrauding a lawyer, who she claimed was the father of her two children.
The woman and the lawyer, Obaduemu Bright, had dated each other for 10 years until recently when a DNA test showed the two children she claimed to have had for him were not his.
Edith, who was arraigned alongside her 54-year-old mother, Mrs. Rita Bitokwu, had allegedly duped the lawyer to the tune of N1m under the guise of bringing up the children.
Edith, who lives on Ibitoye Street, Ajegunle, threatened to inform the lawyer’s wife of the relationship whenever he was unwilling to pay her.
Meanwhile, Bright was said to be aware that the woman was going out with other men, but could not raise the alarm to avoid trouble.
He, however, summoned up courage and challenged her on the legitimacy of the children on September 24, 2014 after he could not raise more than N170,000 of the rent which Edith and her mother allegedly requested from him.
He was said to have taken the children to a hospital where a DNA test reportedly revealed he was not their biological father.

UNIJOS Shut Indefinitely As Soldiers Shoot 8 Protesting Students

Unijos
The University of Jos has been closed down after a protest by students over hike in fees turned bloody, with security officials called in to restore order shooting at least eight students.
A statement, Tuesday, by the University Registrar Jully Dandam, after a hurriedly convened management meeting, said the institution would remain shut “till further notice”.
The statement ordered all students to vacate campus before 2 p.m. on Tuesday as a way of halting the violence and stopping the crisis from spreading to other parts of the state.
The protest by the students, which began on Monday, deteriorated on the second day, with security operatives firing at students.
Witnesses said as the protest continued, a soldier attached to the Special Taskforce on Jos crisis (STF) opened fire on protesters at the Bauchi Road campus of the university, shooting several of them, including a blind student.
However, a spokesperson for the Special Taskforce (STF), Ikedichi Iweha, a Captain, in a telephone interview with Premium Times , said only four students had gunshot wounds, but denied that they were not shot by soldiers.
According to him, the bullets used in shooting the students were not the type the Special Taskforce uses.
He suggested the shooting could have been done by other sister security agencies deployed to the scene of the protest.
Mr. Iweha also claimed that the wounds on the students were minor, and that they were treated at the Task Force’s clinic and discharged.
The STF spokesman claimed the protesting students injured five soldiers who tried to disperse them.
The students had on Monday began protesting increments in development levy of N10,000 for all students, and acceptance fee of N25,000 for freshers.
On Monday, the students held the university managers hostage in their offices
The protest continued on Tuesday with students barricading the Bauchi Road campus and hindering free flow of traffic.
The protest by the students heightened tension within the Plateau State capital, Jos, as businesses around Bauchi Road, Faringada, part of Katako, Nasarawa Gwom as well as Terminus Market closed early, fearing the protest might turn violent.

Halle Berry Drags Ex Gabriel Aubry to Court For ‘Trying to Make Their Daughter Look White’

Hollywood actress Halle Berry has accused her ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry of trying to change the appearance of their daughter and make her look white.
The actress claims her former partner straightened six-year-old Nahla’s hair and highlighted it to make her look less African-American. SMH. Continue…
In a court hearing yesterday, a judge ruled that neither parent – who have joint legal custody – can change Nahla’s natural hair texture or colour.
“I want both Gabriel and I to make decisions together that affect our daughter, her growth, her development and her general welfare,” Halle said in the court documents.
“I continue to hope that Gabriel and I can find a way to work together to be successful co-parents.
“It was with regret that I concluded that I had to seek the court’s intervention on these issues, but until Gabriel recognises the meaning of joint legal custody and how it is implemented, it appears that the court will be my only resort to safeguard Nahla’s best interests.”
Halle and Gabriel split in 2010 after dating for four years. She married Olivier Martinez in 2013 and gave birth to a baby son last year.
Speaking to Ebony in 2011, Halle said she wants her child to make her own mind about how she perceives herself.
“I’m not going to put a label on it,” Halle – who is the daughter of a white mother and a black father – said.
“I had to decide for myself, and that’s what she’s going to have to decide – how she identifies herself in the world.
“And I think, largely, that will be based on how the world identifies her. That’s how I identified myself.
“But I feel like she’s black. I’m black and I’m her mother, and I believe in the one-drop theory.”

Prof.Wole Soyinka Diagnosed Of Cancer!

Wole Soyinka Diagnosed Of Cancer!
Nobel Laureate, renowned playwright, Prof. Oluwole Soyinka, on Tuesday opened up on his health status, saying he was diagnosed of cancer last December.
But an expert and Founder of African Cancer Centre, Lagos, Prof. Olu Williams, quickly assured Soyinka that he would “not die of cancer.”
Williams, who revealed that Soyinka had the disease because of his old age, said the playwright will only “die with the ailment.”
Soyinka, who revealed his cancer status at a press conference at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State, said he had decided to open up so as to create awareness about  cancer disease and to help people take measures to prevent it or seek prompt medical attention for cure.
The Nobel Laureate said he survived the silent killer disease because of early detection, treatment and proper dieting, adding that it has also dawned on him that the family has a history of cancer ailment.
He noted that his initial reaction when it dawned on that he has cancer was to see it as one of those challenges and nuisance that should be dealt with, adding that a time he considered it “an unwanted squatter in his body and had to get rid of it whether it is a slow growing one or malignant.”
However, the nature of the cancer he was treated for was not revealed, his son, Dr. Olaokun Soyinka, who is also the Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, later told The Nation his father was treated for “prostate cancer.”

Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey – ‘Igbo Cannot Be Nigeria’s President’

Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey
The President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey has explained why an Igbo man cannot become Nigeria’s president.
Speaking on Monday in Lagos, at the public presentation of the Igbo centenary book, 100 Years of Amalgamation: Igbo, What Hope in Nigeria, by a Lagos-based journalist, Peter Anosike, Enwo-Igariwey said he made the assertion because Igbo are not united when it comes to leadership roles.
He noted that Igbo people are hardworking, resilient and law-abiding, but every Igbo wants to be leader at the same time.
“If we can solve this problem by trying to learn from our mistakes and believe that there can only be one leader at a time, then we can succeed as a people,” said Enwo-Igariwey.
He said Igbo had huge investments all over the country and that with all the respect and recognition they had earned, they still lacked unity over leadership tussles, as could be seen even in town union meetings.
He said: “It does not have to be the strongest or the richest. Anyone can be supported to succeed. If we unite, people will be afraid of us.”
Also speaking at the book presentation, Chairman of the occasion, Chief Nwabueze Obi, Executive Director, Cabotage, Nigeria Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), said: “We are nomadic. Over 90 percent of our investments are outside Igboland.
“If you go anywhere and do not see an Igbo man, then it is not habitable. If we can channel these gifts to have a united front, we can succeed.”

Vote My Husband Again- Patience Jonathan Tells Women

The first lady has pleaded with Nigerian women to please vote her husband again, so they can continue to benefit what they have been enjoying from the present administration. Mrs Jonathan who was represented by the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs. Sarah Ochekpe, at the opening of a two-day National Conference on Women and Elections, with the theme, “Enhancing Opportunities for Women Candidates”, said the women also need to remember that the girl child education became more prominent under this government.
“I want to once again, urge you to continue to give support to our dear President, who has shown that he is not only gender sensitive but believes in the power and capacity of women to bring about change in society. He has been doing his best to promote the interest of women in Nigeria. It is now time for us to show him our appreciation for all he has been doing as he seeks re-election“.
“It is gratifying that more families are today investing in girls’ education and there are pointers to the fact that in the nearest future, more women will be politically and economically independent.
“However, there is the need to create the enabling environment to enhance women active participation in all areas of development. We must as women begin to aggressively unite, network and build alliances across gender divide in order to secure meaningful change,” she said.
The Women Affairs Minister, Hajia Zainab Maina, in her speech at the occasion however regretted that women were not being taken along in decision and law making.
“The number in terms of female representation in Nigeria reflects the almost exclusion of women. With less than seven per cent representation in elective positions, Nigerian women are among the less represented women in any sense when critical decisions, especially law making and distribution of the country’s resources that have unprecedented impacts on their lives are made,” she said.

Married Priest Sacked For Having Sex With Church Member

Vicar sacked for having sex with parishoner
A married vicar has been sacked after having an affair with one of his parishioners.
The Rev Stephen Vincent, 40, had sex with the woman in a courtyard after meeting her in a bar – three days after he was ordained as a priest.
The pair exchanged as many as 80 texts a day, many of them filled with sexual innuendo, over three months.
However, they slept together on only two occasions.
The woman, who he was mentoring, accused him of rape, which he denied, and the case was dropped after a police investigation.
Mr Vincent, who worked at St Giles church in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, told The Sunday Telegraph he had made a ‘huge, stupid mistake’. He said: ‘In one day I lost my home, my job, and in some ways I nearly lost my family as well. It is the thing I regret most in my life.’
Mr Vincent has been banned from working as a priest for eight years following a hearing by a Lichfield diocese disciplinary panel over the affair that took place in 2012.
His family are also facing eviction from their home, which is owned by the Church of England.
However, his wife Erin, 30, with whom he has three young children, is standing by him. She described her husband as an ‘amazing’ person who ‘made some silly decisions’.
A spokesman for the Lichfield diocese said Mr Vincent had ‘betrayed his wife, his family and his church’.
