‘Super-gonorrhea’ spreads across UK

'Super-gonorrhea' spreads across UK, and doctors haven't found a cure for it
Experts say that the highly drug-resistant strain of the sexually transmitted superbug is at risk of becoming incurable if the only fully effective antibiotic remaining fails.
Efforts have been made to track down the sexual partners of those infected with the disease, which can possibly result in infertility.
Public Health England (PHE) however, reportedly acknowledged that efforts to contain the spread have been of ‘low positive outcome’.
The spotlight of this ‘super- gonorrhoea’ was discovered after the Chancellor of the Exchequer; George Osborne, cautioned that resistance to antibiotics will become “an even greater threat to mankind than cancer” if nothing is done about it.
Public Health England further said that more cases of super gonorrhoea was a “further sign of the very real threat of antibiotic resistance to our ability to treat infections”.
The British Association for Sexual Health and HIV alerted the clinicians, prompting them to monitor cases of high-level drug-resistant gonorrhoea and trace sexually infected partners.
Dr Elizabeth Carlin, a neonatologist in Englewood, New Jersey was also quoted to have said that “The spread of high-level azithromycin-resistant gonorrhoea is a huge concern and it is essential that every effort is made to contain further spread.
“Failure to respond appropriately will jeopardise our ability to treat gonorrhoea effectively and will lead to poorer health outcomes for individuals and society as a whole.”
