Gunmen had stormed the teachers' training college, firing repeatedly on fleeing students and setting off the explosion. Residents of Kabuga area, the host community of the institution said the blast and sporadic gunshots in the vicinity resulted in pandemonium as students and residents scampered to safety while shop owners hurriedly locked up their shops. Armed security men were seen heading to the college. Many students were killed in the attack as the gunmen were shooting even after the bomb blast.
