Prof. Pat Utomi writes on the controversial Charles Soludo article
Professor of political economy and former presidential candidate Pat Utomi shared this on his Facebook this morning.
The firestorm generated by Chukwuma Soludo’s well reasoned commentary on the place of issues in the 2015 electioneering campaign has somehow become the core of the campaign. What a way to come from outside and define agenda.
Of course I do not agree with all the points marshaled by the erstwhile CBN Governor and Patito’s Gang member, but not to commend his citizen duty of engagement or indicate as reprehensible the resort to ad hominen bashing of the former Economic Adviser instead of providing Facts to counter the views he had raised.
That is issues based campaign. I will myself raise logic to support and dispute some of the points in the Soludo intervention.
I do agree with Soludo that issues matter. I also think that those who turn to divisive emotion-laden typecasting of others rather than issues pertaining to the well being of the Nigerian people do a grave disservice not only to democracy but to the long term common Good of all.

Why we cheat on our spouses - Abuja residents speak
Some residents of Abuja decided to explain why they do what they do. Report by News Agency of Nigeria, NAN.
Some married people in Abuja on Wednesday identified the need for material possession as the major reason for infidelity among married couples.
Respondents in separate interviews also mentioned the desire to satisfy emotional needs as another contributory factor. Mr Johnson Eze, a civil servant, said he was cheating on his wife not because he loved her less but for the sole purpose of “catching some fun’’.
He said:
“My marriage is one of the best because my wife, who is God-given, is an understanding woman and she tolerates me a lot. Yet, I still find myself cheating on her just for the fun of it. This does not in any way diminish the love I have for her and my lovely kids. I recall an incident that happened some time ago. I told my wife that I was travelling to Calabar for an official assignment, but ended up with my girlfriend in a hotel, and she found out. The incident almost destroyed my home but thanks to God my wife was able to forgive and forget put the ugly incident behind, ‘’ he said.
Eze, who described infidelity as 'a careless act,’ advised men to desist from it. A female boutique operator, who pleaded anonymity, said the desire to keep up with the latest fashion trend made her to cheat on her husband. According to her, the husband, a low income earner, was financially incapable of meeting her insatiable material needs.
“Besides, my hubby and I fight over things that are not relevant and I lie to him most times to raise extra cash to buy something, which he considers unnecessary. I have not been faithful in my marriage because of the temptation to stay on top of the fashion trend which is way beyond the financial capacity of my husband. Besides the extra cash my boyfriend gives me, whenever I want to collect money from my husband for food stuff and other basic necessities I always double the cost. This has become a habit for me and whenever I don’t get my share in any shopping I do on behalf of the family, I get angry and pick on my husband at any little provocation, ‘’ she added.
A legal practitioner who offered a coined name – Mr Kosi Chiemela – blamed his adulterous actions on lack of intimacy, emotional disconnection and lack of friendship with his wife. Chiemela who described marriage as “one difficult school you cannot graduate from till you die,’’ stated that the only way to escape was to stay single.
“I am a temperamental person and when I newly got married, it was not easy for my wife whose temper is also short. “Both of us hardly agree on anything and the only escape route for me is to seek love and affection elsewhere. “My girlfriend understands me and she tolerates a lot, unlike my wife who blows up like a bomb at the slightest provocation,’’ he said.

Imam arrested over dissapearance of N30m meant for money doubling
The Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in Adeniji Adele, Lagos State, has accused an Imam, Abdullateef Abubakar, of conniving with two other suspects at large to dupe an Abuja-based businessman, Olalekan Adeshina, to the tune of N30m.
Our correspondent gathered that the victim had been consulting the imam, who lives on the Binuyo Street, Ita-Faaji area of the state for special prayers since 2012.
It was learnt that in February 2014, Adeshina reportedly met with the suspect to help him prepare money ritual.
PUNCH Metro learnt that 34-year-old Abubakar rejected the task, but introduced him to a local priest, who lived in Ibafo, Ogun State.
The priest, whose name had yet to be ascertained, was said to have charged Adeshina about N200,000 for the assignment.
After paying the sum, the priest and Adeshina reportedly agreed to meet in Abuja in December, 2014. He was said to have given N30m to the priest and one other suspect, who hoodwinked him into believing that a purported sacrifice would double the amount after seven days
Our correspondent further learnt that the victim rushed down to the imam in Lagos two days after when it occurred to him that he might have been duped. The priest was said to have packed out of his apartment in Ibafo when Adesina went to check him.
Adeshina was said to have reported a case of robbery to the police, leading to Abubakar’s arrest on January 9, 2015.
The FSARS had earlier denied that the imam was in its custody, following an allegation by his wife, Oyeladun, that he was being unlawfully detained.
Oyeladun, however, explained that an officer attached to the station had vowed to deal with the suspect until he produced the priest.
She said, “One of his eyes is swollen already, but the officer said it was just the beginning. All we are demanding is to have him on bail so that his condition will not worsen. My husband did not collect a dime from the money.”
The FSARS’s Public Relations Officer, Lekan Ogundare, said investigation into the case had revealed that the complainant was actually duped, with Abubakar being the mastermind. He added the suspect would be released on bail if he could produce two qualified sureties.
He said
“The complainant approached the imam for spiritual money. He took him to Ibafo, where he introduced him to two other men who are still at large. They ran away after the complainant paid them N30m . We are ready to release the suspect on bail if he can get two sureties who are worth the money. Meanwhile, we are still on the trail of the fleeing suspects.”

Buhari would lead the Nigerian military to fight Boko Haram - Osinbajo
VP candidate of the APC, Prof Yemi Osinbajo says if elected into government, Buhari would lead the Nigerian military in the fight against members of Boko Haram. Speaking at a town hall meeting organized by the Act Now Professionals in Abuja yesterday Jan 26th, Prof Osinbajo said the fight against Boko Haram can not be won by leading from the rear.
"The first priority is security and to question what has gone wrong in the military. Then, funding the military adequately and ensuring that the Commander-In-Chief leads from the front. But when he was Commander-In-Chief, Buhari led from the front as a soldier. You cannot lead from the rear. You cannot fail to go to where the insurgency is taking place and that is what Buhari has been saying.
"I think that the major problem with the question of security is again that it was not prioritised by this government. It was not taken seriously enough from the beginning. When you have a situation, you do not politicise the insurgency like that. You do not point to the opposition and say it is the opposition that is sponsoring it until General Buhari almost lost his life when Boko Haram attacked him. We must start by understanding that there is a war going on in that part of the country and what the government need to do is to get the nation behind it, not pointing accusing fingers at wrong places. We need to look at the whole question of funding and equipping the military. The military at the moment is not equipped. I worked with Femi Falana on the mutiny of some solders and what is the complaint of those soldiers who were charged with mutiny? Their complaint is that they were not given equipment and they wanted them to go to battle. So, how do you say that? How does anybody think that you can fight the insurgents without ammunition?” he said

Oyedepo’s church divided over prayer for Jonathan
During President Goodluck Jonathan’s visit to the Winners’ Chapel on Sunday, a little drama occurred.
According to PM News, attempts by Bishop David Oyedepo to make members of his congregation pray for President Goodluck Jonathan to win the 14 February Presidential election backfired as several members of the congregation refused to stand up.
Bishop Oyedepo reportedly asked that since God always answered prayers of the church members, they should pray for God to give the President the wisdom and strength to rule the country and the unusual grace to lead the nation.
But while many stood up and prayed fervently, some sat down, while some used the opportunity to pray for themselves.
This did not however stop the highly respected preacher from praying for Jonathan.
President Jonathan, with some of his aides, the Chief of Staff to the President, Jones Arogbofa and the Executive Secretary, Christian Pilgrim Board, Mr. Kennedy Okpara, worshipped at the church during its third service after they arrived the church premises in a helicopter.
