PDP crisis: Bamanga Tukur may be sacked on Thursday; Mu’azu, Babayo tipped as successors
Hours after Bamanga Tukur, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, announced the date for the party’s National Executive Committee meeting, indications have emerged that he may be asked to leave office that same day.
Tukur had yesterday in company of head of the party’s Governors’ Forum, Godswill Akpabio, lifted the suspension placed on Sokoto State governor, Aliyu Wamakko.
He used the media briefing to disclose that the NEC of the party will meet in Abuja on Thursday.
But Tukur’s days in office may be numbered as a high-powered committee, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Anyim Pius Anyim, set up to look into the crisis rocking the party, has recommended that the chairman and all members of the National Working Committee, NWC, should resign from their positions at the NEC parley.
The Anyim committee, which has Special Adviser on Political Matters to the President, Ahmed Gulak, also include Governors Goodwill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom, Theodore Orji of Abia, Ibrahim Shema of Katsina, Gabriel Suswam of Benue, and other party stalwarts loyal to the Presidency.
otohmillar gathered that the Anyim committee met for six hours at the Headquarters of the party, and concluded that members of the NWC, should resign in order to find a lasting solution to the ongoing crisis in the party.
Sources say Tukur may be replaced with former governor of Bauchi state, Adami Muazu, or Shehu Babayo, also from Bauchi.
While Babayo was born on March 21, 1957 and hails from Azare Katagum Local Government; Mu’azu was born June 11, 1955. He is from Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area.
Speaking to otohmillar, a source within the party said either of the two will be a good choice.
“Any one eventually picked will do a remarkable job, at least better than an autocratic Tukur. Both are relatively young, exposed, energetic and above all are progressives which is what we need now. So I think they are qualified.”
