Nigerian Goalkeeper Austin Ejide Scores Crazy Own Goal Against Scotland Amid Match-fixing Allegations
Nigerian goalkeeper Austin Ejide scored a freak own goal against Scotland on Wednesday night - just 24 hours after their friendly was in doubt over match-fixing fears.
The Scottish FA has been warned that the clash at Craven Cottage could be targeted after an alert by the National Crime Agency, although it went ahead regardless.
And after Charlie Mulgrew's sensational opener, the Nigerian stopper came out to collect a cross and seemed able to grab the ball easily.
However after a collision with Grant Hanley, Ejide lost control and appeared to throw the ball into his net.
Fortunately referee Lee Probert bailed him out and awarded a free-kick to the Super Eagles who pulled back to 2-2 following a last minute leveller from substitute Uche Nwofor.

Hunger deadlier than AIDS
Today, being the World Hunger Day, offers a reminder on the importance of food to healthy living, and the need to continue exploring all possibilities for eradicating hunger in the world. Millennium Development Goal 1, for example, seeks to “eradicate extreme poverty and hunger’,’ or by 2015 at most, reduce by half, the population of people living in hunger. So, how well has this been achieved?
Taking a look at the hunger index released this year by the World Health Organization (WHO), the goal is nowhere near achievement, as 2015 draws close. Here are a few surprising findings about hunger, which the World Health Organisation released in 2014: Many people in the world do not have enough food. A total of 842 million people in the world are hungry. Asia is worst hit, as it constitutes 552 of this number, followed by Sub-Saharan Africa, with 24.8% of the population.
Hunger kills more people yearly than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, put together. Millions of women, men and children die each year because of chronic persistent hunger, of which two million are children. One third of all death in children is caused by under nutrition. Poverty is the major cause of hunger. A situation where people do not have sufficient money to purchase food About 20,000 people die from poverty every day, with 10 percent from hunger There is a huge variation in how much people eat, which shows that they do not eat healthily
United owner Glazer dies
Manchester United owner, Malcolm Glazer, has died. His death was announced on Wednesday night by his National Football League franchise, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Glazer controversially became owner of United in May 2005 and his tenure was an uneasy one, with many fans unhappy at the level of debt his takeover had put on the club, who have largely continued to prosper ever since.
“The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are saddened to announce the passing of owner/president Malcolm Glazer earlier this morning at the age of 85,” the Buccaneers announced on their official website. It is understood Glazer’s death will not have any significant effect on the ownership of the Barclays Premier League club, with the family retaining a 90 per cent share. A spokesperson for the Old Trafford outfit sent a short-worded condolence. “The thoughts of everyone at United are with the family tonight.”
Glazer came to limelight in England with his acquisition of United nine years ago, using loans against the club’s assets to finance his takeover, which totalled almost £800 million. United had previously been a debt-free club and it was Glazer’s means that brought the ire of a number of supporters, although the club have continued to enjoy plenty of good times on the pitch, such as five Premier League, three League Cup, and the 2007/08 Champions League triumphs.
Born in Rochester, New York, as one of seven children, Glazer took over his family business at the age of 15, following the death of his father. He went on to thrive in professional business, owning or becoming a substantial shareholder in a number of renowned public companies. Glazer is survived by his wife Linda, six children, which include United’s co-chairmen, Joel and Avram Glazer.

Patience Jonathan: “He Is The Head, Stop Abusing My Husband”
Nigeria’s first lady — Patience Jonathan, has come forward to defend her husband who has been the recent target for insults and blame for all the wrongs happening in the country.
Patience Jonathan, today Tuesday 27th May 2014, has advised Nigerians to desist from abusing her husband because God has made him the commander-in-chief of the nation.
According to Punch, the wife of the President made this statement while addressing children at an event she organized to celebrate kids on Children’s Day at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa.
“It is bad to abuse our country and the President because God has made him the head. The Almighty God commands us to pray for our leaders. We therefore need to pray for the development of our country and the president.
Remember that a child that abuses his father and mother is disobeying God’s commandment because the Bible says in Exodus 20:12 that you should honour your father and mother so that you may live long in the land that the Lord your God has given you.
The Holy Bible is not referring to only biological parents. Any one that is older than you even for a day must be respected. Let us therefore join hands and rebuild our country Nigeria.” she said.
She also promised not to relent in helping find the 200+ school girls abducted in the Chibok area of Borno. “Let me thank the children that gave me letter to give Boko Haram. Well, I have received your letter, but I am not the one to give it to Boko Haram because I don’t know Boko Haram and I have never seen Boko Haram. But I will give it to the NSS or Chief of Defence Staff who will submit your letter accordingly.
To my children parliament, thank you for your letter. Thank you for your deliberation. I have received what you gave to me. I will make sure I pass it to the President because it is addressed to him and the other one is addressed to Boko Haram. That is why the two are different.” she stated.

Ignore The Rumours! FG’s Topmost Priority Is National Security Not Public Relations- Abati
Here is a press release sent in from the State House.
Reports in national and foreign media that the Federal Government is currently in the process of recruiting an international public relations firm to “counter mounting criticism both inside and outside the country” are completely false and baseless.
The suggestion that the Federal Government intends to spend a staggering sum of $800 Million on the phantom public relations effort to ease “increasing pressure over its response to the kidnapping of more than 200 schoolgirls” is also wholly untrue.
Coming as they do, at a particularly difficult and sensitive time for the entire nation, the Federal Government considers the reports of a drive to recruit consultants to launder its image highly insensitive, deplorable, absurd and very malicious.
The Federal Government’s topmost priority for now is not public relations or image laundering but national security and the ongoing effort to ensure the safe return of the abducted college girls.
We therefore condemn the attempt by purveyors of the bogus reports to incite the Nigerian public against the Federal Government through the circulation of falsehoods .

Akpabio’s ‘domestic staff’ to earn N5m a month
The Akwa Ibom House of Assembly has passed the Former Governor and Deputy Governor’s Pension Bill 2014 into law, which means, among others, that after Governor Godswill Akpabio steps aside in 2015, he will have N5m a month to employ domestic staff, while his deputy, Mrs. Valerie Ibe, gets N2.5m for the same purpose.
He will also be paid pension for life at the rate of his current salary. Upon retirement, Akpabio will earn an annual pension of N26.7m, while Ibe will earn an annual pension of N25.3m. The executive bill was passed after just 11 days, having been submitted to the Assembly by the governor on May 15, 2014. It had passed the first and second reading, and was presented for deliberations at committee of the whole at plenary on Monday.
It states that a former governor will also be entitled to free medical services for himself and his spouse at a sum not exceeding N100 million per annum and N50 million for a former deputy governor.
It also seeks to provide for a former governor a befitting accommodation not below a 5-bedroom maisonette in either Abuja or Akwa Ibom. This is in addition to a yearly accommodation allowance of 300 per cent of annual basic salary for an ex- governor, which in Akpabio’s case amounts to N6.7m. Also, a former governor will receive a severance gratuity of 300 per cent of annual basic salary — another N6.7m — as at the time he leaves office.
There are provisions for furniture allowance once in every four years, and yearly fuelling and maintenance of vehicle for another N6.7m each, in addition to other needs to me met by preset percentages of the annual basic salary. Deputy House Leader Dr Ekaete Okon (PDP) moved a motion for the bill to be read the third time and passed into law, while the motion was seconded by Mr Aniekan Akpan (PDP-Ukanafun). After the bill was passed, Speaker of the House, Mr Samuel Ikon, directed the clerk of the House to forward a clean copy of the bill to the governor. Akpabio’s governorship tenure will end in about a year from now, having assumed governorship of the state on May 29, 2007.
Fear of Ansaru hampers rescue of Chibok girls as military locates hostage site
Efforts by security agencies to rescue hundreds of schoolgirls in Boko Haram captivity are being hampered by fears that another militant group, Ansaru, may be involved. Ansaru (pictured), also called Jama’atu ansaril muslimina fi biladis Sudan (Vanguards for the Protection of Muslims in Black Africa), are known to harm their hostages at the slightest indication that they are about to be rescued.
The security forces fear a “massive tragedy” if the insurgents decide to adopt the “Ansaru style” in resisting rescue operations. Nevertheless, they are making “considerable progress” in the search for the girls ─ with the support of UK, US and Israel, according to military sources.
On Monday, chief of defence staff, Air Chief Marshall Alex Badeh, said the military had located the girls but could not act with force. He was speaking to members of the Citizen Initiative for Security Awareness (CISA), an NGO, who were on a solidarity campaign to the defence headquarters in Abuja. He said: “We want our girls back, I can tell you that our military can and will do it, but where they are held, can we go there with force? “Nobody should say Nigerian military does not know what it is doing; we can’t kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back.
“So we are working, the President has empowered us to do the work, anybody castigating the military, definitely there is something wrong with him. “The good news for the parents of the girls is that we know where they are, but we cannot tell you. “We cannot come and tell you the military secret, just leave us alone, we are working to get the girls back.” Badeh revealed that the fight against insurgency was quite different from full scale war, adding that “if we are fighting an external war, they would have been begging us to withdraw”.

While presenting the 2014 budget signed last week by Pres. Jonathan to newsmen, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Finance Minister revealed that the Nigerian military has received N130.7billion from the Federal Government from January to April 2014 and that another N3.8b has been approved by the president but was still being processed and will soon be released to the military.
She revealed this to deny claims by the Nigerian military and other security agencies that poor funding was undermining ongoing war against terrorism. Defending the huge amount being spent in the military, Dr Okonjo-Iweala said;
"Defence spending is top in everything. You know that military establishments need new things to assist them in their work, and ours will not be different. No budget will be enough to meet their demands but for now, I think the sector takes almost a trillion of the budget.”
"The defence budget in 2014 is about N968.127 billion and we have disbursed N130.7 billion between January and April 2014, N85.9billion out of what has been disbursed is for personnel cost.
