Jose Mourinho has admitted he has made Chelsea dull to watch
The defensive one? Mourinho has been criticised over the past two weeks for defensive displays in Madrid and Liverpool .Jose Mourinho has admitted he has made Chelsea dull to watch.
But he insisted it was the only way of being sure the Blues would qualify for the Champions League. Mourinho revealed he changed his side’s tactics after they shipped six goals in four days at Sunderland and Stoke in December.
Chelsea could finish the season empty-handed after their midweek European exit, with criticism raining down on Mourinho after he “parked two buses” in the victory over Liverpool last Sunday .
But Mourinho said: “At a certain moment of the season I made the decision to stop our evolution in style and philosophy of play and go the only way, with this team and these players, we could get results.
“I felt we had no conditions to go as far as we did in the Champions League or in the Premier League if we didn’t transform our style of play.Appropriate tactic? Mourinho’s conservative style took Chelsea into the Champions League semi-final, while the Blues still have an outside chance of domestic glory
“There came a moment when I felt it was dangerous and that there was a big risk that we could be out of the top four.
“If we hadn’t gone for a bit more stability and development of a certain philosophy, it was a big risk. So from that point the team became more strategical and less intuitive, because we went for results.”
Mourinho opted for an off-hand dig at his main London rival, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, as he added: “It’s not a cup; I don’t want to get a bonus for finishing in the top four. No way, no way. The moment I think like that I’m in trouble.”
But he was less siubtle in his criticism of Eden Hazard was far more up-front, despite insisting he was unconcerned that the Belgian had complained Chelsea were “not set up to play football”.
Mourinho added: “This is normally the kind of comment you get from players who can’t resolve a problem like we had with the first goal (against Atletico).
“Against Atletico in Madrid, Willian played on the left side and Ashley Cole was protected all game. Against Liverpool, Schurrle played on the left and a dangerous player like Glen Johnson was completely under control.
“Eden is the kind of player who is not so mentally ready to look back at his left-back and lay down his life for him. If you see Atletico’s first goal, you understand where the mistake was and why we conceded that goal.
Not sacrificial: Eden Hazard was subjected to criticism from Mourinho after his defensive lapses cost Chelsea against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night
“That doesn’t mean I want him to change but he’s not the kind of player who is ready to sacrifice himself 100 per cent for the team and his mates.”
Mourinho, though, insisted Chelsea who can still win the league by beating Norwich and Cardiff if both Liverpool and Manchester City blow up will be a different proposition next term.
The Blues remain confident of landing £32million Atletico striker Diego Costa and Mourinho said: “We have created the right basis for next year.
“But there have been games where we’ve created 12 chances, only scored one and were always in trouble because we didn’t have a killer profile.”
