BREAKING: Kano youths on the rampage over choice of Sanusi as new emir

Some youths in Kano have gone on the rampage following the announcement of Malam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new emir. Secretary to the Kano State Government, Alhaji Rabiu Bichi, had declared the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as the successor to Alhaji Ado Bayero, who died last Friday.
Rumours had circulated all day on Sunday that the first son of the late emir, Alhaji Lamido Sanusi Ado Bayero, had been picked as the successor. Following the announcement of Sanusi, the youths took to the streets, chasing motorists off the road and making bonfires in protest. They are rejecting the choice of Sanusi and aksing that Bayero’s son be installed.
They started chanting “we don’t want, we don’t want” in Hausa language.
Motorists were forced to display fresh leaves on their windshields as a sign of “solidarity” in order to avoid being attacked. A similar scenario played out in Sokoto in 1988 when the sultan, Alhaji Siddiq Abubakar III, died.
Rumours had circulated that Alhaji Muhammadu Maccido had been chosen by the kingmakers as his replacement, but the military government announced Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki. Youths took to the streets in protest. Dasuki was eventually deposed by the military government in 1996 and Maccido was installed, although he later died in a plane crash 10 years after.
