Blogger remanded in Ikoyi prison over obscene story on MD of UBA
An Igbosere Magistrate Court, sitting in Lagos State on Friday adjourned to October 30, 2015 a case of complaint against an online publisher, Desmond Ike Chima, by the Managing Director of the United Bank of Africa Plc, Philip Oduoza.
In a five-count charge against the defendant, the prosecutor, Henry Obiazi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, said Chima published an obscene article against Oduoza on March 20, 2015.
The story was titled: “Randy UBA MD, Philip Oduoza’s wife to divorce him over affair with Actress Genevieve Nnaji.”
Obiazi said the offence is punishable under section 150(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
Chima was also accused of intent to extort or gain anything from Oduoza by accusing him on April 27, 2015 of defrauding UBA with his company, Afriland Properties, and thereby committed an offence punishable under section 301(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused, who was led into the court room by the Investigative Police Officer, Inspector Omale Anebi of the Force Intelligence Bureau (Alagbon Annex), however, pleaded not guilty.
Chima was granted bail in the sum of N100,000 and two sureties, who must be landed property owners in the state.
The blogger was not able to meet the bail condition of the court and was thus remanded in Ikoyi Prison.
Leading lawyer to Oduoza, Barrister Ayo Durojaiye, and the defendant’s lawyer, Barrister Margret Lawan, did not oppose the adjournment date by the magistrate, A.O. Ajayi of Court 14.
